Shana & The Hooligans – Get Gone

By | Music & Reviews

Summer is approaching, and Shana & the Hooligans are ready.

After premiering the anthem “Get Gone” on Vibe last week, Shana Halligan (Thievery Corporation, Bitter:Sweet) and Chuck Wild (Captain Planet, The Beatards) found fan love in the form of a send-off video to soon-to-be former owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, Donald Sterling. The video features news grabs from the Sterling controversy cleverly edited to “Get Gone”. Meanwhile, “Get Gone” is now available on iTunes, and to celebrate, here’s a FREEmp3 of the remix, by Chuck Wild.

It’s been a busy week for Shana. Currently on tour with Thievery Corporation, Consequence of Sound just premiered the video for “Depth of My Soul,” her song with Thievery Corporation.  The stunning video features Shana as a star-crossed lover.

Most well known as the lead singer/songwriter of the pop group Bitter:Sweet, Shana Halligan’s debut solo EP, Paper Butterfly charted at #3 on iTunes when it was released in 2012, and became a Top 5 Most Requested on KCRW. She has collaborated with artists ranging from Serj Tankian (System Of A Down) to dance guru Morgan Page.

Collaborator Chuck Wild is the producer / DJ behind Captain Planet and The Beatards. Captain Planet’s mixtape, “Mystery Trip Vol. 1” was included in Sasha Frere-Jones’ “Best Music of 2012”, and his new album, Esperanto Slang, coming this summer on Bastard Jazz Records, features the single “Poquito Mas ft. Chico Mann”. Chuck Wild has done remixes (both official and bootleg) for Lorde, Banks, Little Dragon, Katy B, Alice Russell, Ana Tijoux, Mayer Hawthorne and many more. Chuck also runs the popular music blog & online radio outletMixtape Riot.

New Brother In Arms – All This Love

By | Music & Reviews

Here is a ridiculously tasty clubby deep house gem from Brother In Arms.  If you’re unfamiliar with these guys, BIA is made up of Deejay Theory and J Boogie. You should know Theory from our Major Lazer feature, and J Boogie is kind of a legend in the West Coast downbeat scene as he’s got a number of incredible releases with his Dubtronic Science project.  Together as Brother In Arms, they’re just scary.  The impeccable taste and production talents are always on full display as they most certainly are again here with “All This Love.”  ’90s club feels with layers of gorgeous synths and pianos making the mix soar to euphoric heights.  If you can’t tell, I think these dudes are the real deal and this new freebie just in time for SXSW should show you why.

After a long week rocking South by Southwest, Deejay Theory will be in Miami this week for Winter Music Conference madness. Thursday you can check him at Blackbird with DJ Spinna and Cash Money. On Saturday, he’ll be rocking The Jillionair’s (Major Lazer) Chicken & Beer party with a slew of other talented acts. On Sunday, he heads to Tampa to rock with DJ Casper and the crew at Dirty Laundry. If you’re down south, don’t sleep!

Raggabund’s “Luchando y Cantando” ft. Captain Planet, Clan Urbano & Sarmiento [GLOBAL]

By | Music & Reviews

Raggabund are Paco Mendoza and Don Caramelo, two South American brothers (born in Argentina to Peruvian and Paraguayan parents) who live in Berlin, Germany, and play mestizo reggae en español.

If that’s not global enough for you, they hooked up on this new track with Spain’s Sarmiento and Peru’s Clan Urbano to do some ragga toasting with positive, uplifting lyrics over a riddim provided by Mr. Global Dance Fusion himself, Los Angeles’ Captain Planet. Oh, and they shot the video in Lima, Peru!

After Captain Planet remixed Ana Tijoux’s “Shock”> a few years ago, I’ve been impatiently waiting for him to do more work with Spanish-speaking artists. I say keep ‘em coming Oh Captain, My Captain! Let the intercontinental reggae good vibes take over.

DC get ready. DJ Questlove, hot of the premier of the Tonight Show, returns to Howard Theatre Friday February 28, for a night of music magic. Brush you’re dancing shoes off and get your tickets now before it sells out!

?uestlove is the unmistakable heartbeat of The Roots, Philadelphia’s most influential hiphop band. His uncanny ear for picking the perfect song for the perfect moment landed him the position of musical director of The Dave Chapelle Show.

?uestlove’s insatiable love of music has led him on a worldwide crate-digging journey. He has amassed a vinyl collection of more than 50,000 records that are shelved in a floor to ceiling, climate controlled library room in his personal studio. What to do with all those records? DJ, of course. ?uestlove has rocked parties to sold out crowds worldwide. With such a diverse collection, he is able to deliver an eclectic variety of sets. DEEJAY THEORY @ HIFI CLUB – CALGARY!

By | In The News

BUSSIN’ THE BASS ON THE DANCEFLOOR

From his roots in New England messing about on piano as a toddler, through his youth playing drums and chopping records as his parents enjoyed the “bass and loud aroma wafting through the heat vents” to now as a touring Deejay and producer, Deejay Theory has always been immersed in beats and melodies. “I got my first pair of turntables at 16 and knew I’d found my niche not just in music, but in my life as a whole.”

Relocating to San Francisco in 2008, Theory has found inspiration in the city’s non-stop music scene and runs Tormenta Tropical, a monthly club night with Oro11. Increasingly known for his production, Theory has remixes with Sizzla Kalonji, Gappy Ranks and Blackout JA, collaborations with Kush Arora, Porier, Jahdan Blakkamore and Tittsworth and has recently launched Brother in Arms, a new side project with J Boogie that draws on disco, house and R&B that released their first 12” on Whiskey Disco in December.

djtheory-m2While deeply routed in dancehall, Deejay Theory’s sets traverse a range of genres with most performances including some hip hop, disco and global bass. Of these emerging sounds he says, “the ‘global bass’ movement has definitely exploded the last few years. I think a lot of the attention it’s gotten has been in response to groups like Major Lazer’s impact on massive audiences that were previously not dialed in to these types of sounds. Moombahton played a huge role as well considering the pace it took off worldwide after its inception in 2009, and also had a major impact on my personal sound and style.”

As well as his production and DJ work, Theory is a regular contributor at LargeUp.com and curates Mixtape Mondays. “I’ve always enjoyed writing and have a deep appreciation for Caribbean culture so working with LargeUp was a perfect fit. We’ve been curating more exclusive mixes this past year from Jillionaire, Red Fox, Safari Sound and more. Most recent standout for mixes was Walshy Fire and Major Lazer’s collab with Suns of Dub (Augustus Pablo’s son Addis and more) exploring the future sound of dub music.”

Through his various projects, Deejay Theory has developed deep knowledge of current Caribbean music. Looking back over the year he says, “2013 was another big year for reggae and dancehall for sure. A couple standout singles were Charly Black & J CapriWine and Kotch, Bunji Garlin’s Differentology and of course Major Lazer’s Watch Out Fi This with Busy Signal. Couple riddim picks would be BoomFirst Capital and Pop Style. Really dug Douster’s Inna Style and Fashion EP on Mixpak. It was dope to see Shabba Ranks on the official Shabba remix and Jamtech working with Bounty Killer onDedicated. Really enjoyed practically everything Kaytranada touched this year, as well as the whole Soulection camp. Dubbel Dutch and Salva’s remixes were crate staples this year as well.”

Returning to Calgary to play at the Hifi Thursday January 9th, Theory is hyped for the show. “Hifi is such a fun room. I might put something together and then feel like the crowd is ready to take it somewhere unexpected, exactly what I love about DJing on the road. I’ll definitely buss’ some of the new dancehall remixes and tropical bass shit and probably squeeze in some rap, disco and house vibes as well.”
